What's for dinner: Christmas Cookie time!

Since I was a little girl, my family and I have made Christmas cookies every single year. Even the years that my Oma says she's not making any, a batch or 2 appears anyways. We usually start the season off with Oma's butterplätzen (My Grandma's butter cookies) and you'll usually find some zimtsterne (German cinnamon stars) and of course vanillekipferln.

What's for dinner: Turkey Day Food Coma!

How was your Thanksgiving?? Mine was fantastic. We went from just a simple holiday meal for myself and my better half to dinner for FIVE! No worries though, I always make more than I need so there was plenty to go around. Plus my dear gay husband and his friends brought over some delish Thanksgiving goodies as well.

Here's what we had:
(From the top left: Cranberry sauce, Brown sugar Ham, Green bean casserole,
Gravy, Turkey, Cranberry Sage Stuffing, Cornbread, and my world famous Macaroni and Cheese.)
And I thought we wouldn't have enough food!

I hope your turkeys are enjoying their 'brining baths'! I know mine is! Since I am only cooking for 3 people, I decided to go with a breast (bone in) and a few wings. Nonetheless, it still needs brining. Here's what I put in my turkey's brine bath:

1½ cartons of Chicken stock
enough water to cover the turkey (a little less than a gallon)
½ cup of sea salt
½ cup of brown sugar
¼ cup of black peppercorns

What's for Dinner: A Veteran's favorite meal

Happy Veteran's Day!

I want to start today’s post by saying thank you to all the men and women who have served or are currently serving our country. One Vet in particular, my Dad. For those of you that don’t know I’m an Army Brat… my Father served for 20 years. In honor of him and all the other Vet’s out there I wanted to post the recipe for his favorite meal. Just one problem… what is his favorite meal??? My Dad is one of those Dad’s that LOVES everything. Then again when you have spent years eating MRE’s and Chow hall food, you appreciate the good stuff. Anyhow, after talking to him, he said if he had to choose one meal it would be Spaghetti.

Monday Funday!

Happy Monday!

Over the last few month my better half and I have been trying to eat healthier and cleaner, which tends to mean more home cooked meals. This also means that we have gotten creative when it comes to cravings. The most recent "have to have meal" was pasta... good old fashion spaghetti specifically. I can't remember the last time I've had pasta... because let's be honest, pasta is not looked highly upon by my trainer. Any who... since we had to have it... I figured out a way to make it in a way that not only we can have, but that is also scrumptious.

Here is what I came up with...

What's for Dinner??

Hello fellow foodies!

It seems like Fall has finally arrived to our beloved city. While the North East is being pummeled by the first snow storms of the season we are freezing in our perfectly sunny skies and 60 degree weather. Go figure! What can I say; you get spoiled by the heat! Nevertheless, the fall season is all about delicious hearty soups, stews and other comfort foods. So, what better way to kick off the 'cold' than with one of my favorite soups, Julia Child's Leek and Potato soup.

Sorry I missed you guys yesterday! But don't fear... your what's for dinner post is here! :-)

Midweek Eats: Healthier Arroz con Pollo??

Welcome to Midweek Eats!

Remember the "What's for Dinner" post I did a couple weeks back on my arroz con pollo dinner plans? Well, I did make it  that weekend as promised, and today I want to finally share the details.

As I have mentioned many times before, I never follow a recipe verbatim and with my recent weight loss efforts I decided that I would change this recipe a little bit to make it as figure friendly as possible. In order to do that, I decided to use brown rice instead of white rice. Keep in mind this changes the dish quite a bit because the texture of brown rice is different than white rice, but that doesn't mean that it can't be just a flavorful.

The recipe is listed below, but before you get to that here is a step by step via some photo's I took during the process, check it out...

What's for dinner: Don't eat me!

Yesterday while roaming around the Dekalb farmer's market, I came upon one of my favorite area's in the whole place... the fish market. Sure it's smelly and cold, but there is so much to choose from and the prices are generally pretty good. Anyhow, I looked up and saw the big sign hanging on the lobster tank... "Live Maine Lobster $9.99/lb". I turned to my better half, and I said. I wanna do it. I want to finally cook a live lobster. Truth be told, I have never cooked a live lobster. Ever. Tails, absolutely. But a living, crawling lobster. No. Until last night.

Don't eat me...

Happy Friday! I have some exciting stuff for you today... I finally made it over to Richard Blais's new restaurant... HD1.

Clad in workout gear my good friend and I marched our way down the freedom park trail and eventually landed in the Poncey-Highlands right in front of the fancy 'Haute' dog joint.

Midweek Eats: Korean barbecue

Good afternoon good people! I hope you are all enjoying the week so far.

So, last Friday a good friend and I ventured out to Buford Highway to experience a little international treat... Hae Woon Dae   for some Korean barbecue.

Believe it or not, this was my first true Korean barbecue experience (the beef bulgogi appetizer at Aja doesn't count).

First let me start by saying you don't go here for the ambiance. Dated decor and Asian boy bands singing their latest pop song on the big screen hanging over the bar isn't quite what I expected, but the food more than makes up for it.

Monday funday!

Happy Monday!

I apologize for slacking lately, moving has been a pain in the butt! This isn't a home improvement blog, but GEEZ, did I under estimate how much work we had to do to get our new home together! Between working, putting up blinds, adding shelving to our closet, unpacking and cleaning I haven't had much to give to my blog lately. However, things are slowly but surely coming back to normal, and I'm super, super excited because I finally have a gas stove again! Hallelujah!

Anywho,  make sure you head over to Makes me wanna holler for "Monday's with Michelle".

Also, a little tid bit of fun food news.... Richard Blais, Top Chef super star and owner of FLIP Burger Boutique has opened another trendy spot, HD1...  a gourmet hot dog joint. It just opened last week in the highlands, so I will be making my way over soon to check it out. Let me know how it is if you already been.

Hope you all have a yummy week! See you back here on Wednesday for "Midweek Eats".

Midweek Eats!

Hello readers! I hope that you all have been having a wonderful and yummy week so far.

I have had one very crazy week already and it is only Wednesday! So, unfortunately I am going to have to keep it short and sweet today.

I wish I had lots of photos of all the yummy and healthy food that I have been eating, but truth be told… it’s hasn’t been much of either. Mostly Panaera for dinner…. Chicken noodle soup and Greek salad or Smoothie King smoothies. Which both are pretty good when you’re hungry, but not nearly as great as some of the yumminess I cooked up last week. Buuuuuttt, this is what happens when you are moving and in between houses.

That being said, I hope to be back to cooking and restaurant hoping next week. In the meantime… here is a little re-play from one of my “Monday’s with Michelle” posts, just in case you didn’t get a chance to read it on E. Payne’s Blog Makes me wanna Holler.

Midweek Eats…

Happy hump day! Today, I want to go back a couple of weeks to play catch-up; I realized that I never shared my German Bierfest adventure with you all.

The 8th annual German Bierfest was hosted by German American Chamber of Commerce at Woodruff Park. They had an extensive list of German Beers and few tasty snacks from Der Biergarten, Ormsby’s and Petite Auberge Restaurant.

Below is my recap in pictures, enjoy!

This week a friend and I made it over to the West Midtown area to try out Westside Pie (and to use their free wifi). It’s located in the retail space directly below the apartments of Apex West midtown. This pizza joint has only been open for a few months and is owned by the duo that runs Slice downtown.

What’s for Dinner?? Baked Tilapia and Asparagus…

Happy Friday good people!

I thought I would share another quick meal with you . I got home at about 930pm the other night and was starving, as usual. After a quick scan of the fridge, freezer and pantry, I decided on Tilapia and Asparagus. I had planned on using the Tilapia to make fish tacos, but was in no mood to chop, dice and search the refrigerator for all the components I wanted on my tacos.... so, quick and easy baked Tilapia won.

Ahh Scoutmob, the very cool local deal wizard that allows us to eat out continuously and not feel too bad about spending too much money. I don’t know about you all, but one of the first things I do in the morning is search my blackberry for the Scoutmob email to see who’s gonna give me 50% off this week.

Coast Seafood and Raw Bar was the latest winner.

Midweek eats: Crispy Baked Chicken Wings

Happy Hump day my lovelies!

Today, I have for you a spin on a classic; Chicken Wings. They are usually fried and covered in some type of finger licking sauce (which I love by the way), but in an effort to be a tad more health conscious I have taken to baking them.

Baking Crispy Wings

It’s a pretty simple recipe; you really just need a good spice mix and some time. Here is the recipe…

What’s for dinner?? Street Meat...

We finally made it to Food Truck Wednesday in the Highlands and got to try some infamous ‘Street Meat’. I have to say I really enjoyed the whole scene. People out in the sun roaming from truck to truck, finding empty spots on the concrete to sit and chat while they ate. It really was a lot of fun.

All the usual suspects were out and we got the chance to dabble around with, Yumbii, Slider UJust Loaf'N Po'Boys and Honeysuckle Gelato.

Midweek Eats…Barbecue!

I’d love to say that my first meal back eating solid food after being sick(other than lime flavored popsicles) was a delish gourmet home cooked meal, but it wasn’t. I was craving barbecue, so I ventured to Fat Matt's Rib Shack…. let the gluttony commence.

What’s for dinner: cough drops, soup and popsicles

For those of you that follow me on twitter you know that I have been sick all week long and it has sucked. Majorly. My week has consisted of couch laying, sleeping, red box movie watching, whining, fever sweating, Olympic cough drop eating and extreme nose blowing.

Midweek eats: Cooking for the in-laws…

There is always some kind of initiation process when entering someone’s family through marriage. For my future in-laws, part of this obstacle is how well one can execute a home cooked meal.  (insert side-eye here..lol) I completed the said challenge by attempting to woo them with my famous mixed green salad with homemade salad dressing and a simple Spinach Tagliatelle pasta with Shrimp and tomatoes in a white wine butter sauce. Sounds good, right?

What’s for dinner?? Guest Post: All Dressed Up In Love: Tuxedo Strawberries

Remember those very cute, very delicious tuxedo strawberry men that I ate for dinner here? Well the very creative gentleman that created them has graced us with our very first guest post and the how-to on these cute little treats. Enjoy!

Hello all, my name is Níco. I love cooking and food preparation just because it allows you to literally fill people with the love you put into the food you offer them – and this recipe offers a unique opportunity to not only cook love into your food, but to even dress your food up with love. Although it takes a little extra time, this recipe (or preparation, to be more precise) is as fun as it is rewarding. It will make the love you feel for the special person (or people) you are preparing it for both palpable and well presented… after all – who doesn’t love a nice tuxedo?

Ingredients/Materials:

  • 1 package of fresh strawberries, washed and dried completely (stem on)
  • 1/2 lbs (depending on your taste) of each: white and dark chocolate bits, squares, or kisses (80% cacao for dark is best)
  •  Wax Paper
  • Ziploc Sandwich Bags
  • Microwave
After having washed and most importantly, DRIED the strawberries, place the white and dark chocolate in a 2 large bowls (separate, of course). Then place the wax paper on a cool counter top surface or on a cookie sheet. Next warm the white chocolate for about 30 seconds at a time in the microwave, stirring very well between warming intervals… Remember – this is a labor of love… white chocolate is very temperamental, but if you take your time with it and warm it slowly then it will be smooth and beautiful… if not it can burn, and believe me you’ll know if it does! Once it is smooth simply take each strawberry gently by the stem and slowly dip it into the white chocolate, but leave a touch of strawberry showing for presentation, placing each one on the wax paper to cool.

Step 1: Strawberries in white chocolate shirts
Once you have given each strawberry its shirt, the next step is to give them their coat. Warm the dark chocolate in the same way as the white, however this chocolate is not nearly as formidable an obstacle as the white. Do remember, however, to save some for the next step. Now you simply dip each berry in the same way, but this time creating a V shape showing a significant portion of white on the front of the berry and covering the back with dark chocolate.

Step 2: Dark Chocolate Jacket
Finally, we must give our men their studs and bow ties – this is done by warming some of the dark chocolate in a Ziploc bag at 10-15 second intervals and gently massage it in between. Be sure not to press to hard or it will get everywhere! Then cut a very small part of a corner off and use it to dot on the studs and draw an X above them, closing the ends to make bow ties!

Step 3: Chocolate studs and bow ties
The only thing left to do then is present them well for your loved ones. This small act is sure to make a big impression and is a unique way of showing how you feel. After all, it really is a special occasion if even your food got dressed up for it, isn’t it?

Strawberry men in Chocolate Tuxedos!

Midweek eats: Girls night!!

I recently made dinner for my 'girls' night with my favorite gay, 'Gi-Gi'. After a quick trip to Kroger to pick up fruit tarts for dessert, we made our way back to my house to get cooking... and drinking. :-)

We started with a simple mixed green salad and a homemade vinaigrette.

Girls night salad...mixed greens, yellow tomatoes,  red onions and cucumbers.
To follow, we had a delicious, perfectly seared fillet with asparagus and parsley potatoes. I planned to make a red wine reduction to go with, but got a little too tipsy (thanks to my empty stomach) and I didn't even think about it until we were half way through the meal. Don't worry, It was deliciously perfect exactly the way it was.

Girls night dinner... Asparagus, Fillet, and Parsley Potatoes
You should try changing up your girls night or 'bromance' dinners and cook at home. You save money, you can drink more (lots more if you are the hostess!), you can laugh, scream and giggle without disturbing the table next to you and for you healthy eaters out there, you can control what goes into your food. Give it a try and email me what you made!

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your hump day! I will see you back here on Friday for "What's for dinner?"

Monday Funday! The Gelato edition…

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAAAMM!
Cheesy, I know, but I couldn’t resist! :-)
As I mentioned in a previous post, Monday Funday is a real thing in my house, and the latest, Monday Funday thing has been to go to Paolo's Gelato Italiano in the Virginia Highlands and indulge in some amazing ice cream.
If you haven’t been yet, you must get there asap. It reminds me of the Italian ice shops from my home town in Germany. I mean they even have spaghetti ice cream for God’s sake! (Military kids und alle meine Deutsche stand up if you remember ‘spaghetti ice')
Paolo’s has been around since 1999, serving up over 62 fresh homemade flavors that change weekly (check out the list here). The even have a “Gelato Alert”; it’s a subscription to receive an email on the flavors that they are concocting for the week.
Yummy Ice Cream line up for the day at Paolo's

They have just about any flavor you can think of... Flower flavors like, Orange Blossom and Rose; Vegetable flavors like Avocado and Basil; and of course all the traditional cream and fruit based flavors like Chocolate, Banana and Strawberry (and many, many more). My absolute favorite thus far is their Pistachio ice cream. It is like heaven in your mouth. I’m not a huge fan of regular ol’ store bought pistachio, but this ice cream; you have to taste it to believe it.
All mine! Yummy Pistachio!

So get to Paolo’s Gelato ASAP and find your favorite flavor!
